Shrish Jawadiwar (he/him/his) is a classical composer, double bassist, viola da gamba, and violone player based in the New Jersey–Philadelphia area. As a composer, he composes primarily for acoustic instruments, including chamber ensembles (both standard ensembles like string quartet and brass quintet as well as unique combinations of instruments), orchestra, choir, solo instruments, and accompanied vocalists. Shrish works in both historical and contemporary styles and often incorporates elements from his native tradition: Hindustāni classical music from North India. His works have been premiered by Hub New Music, The College of New Jersey Orchestra, The College of New Jersey Chorale, Temple Composers’ Orchestra, and Temple New Music Ensemble. His teachers in composition include Robert Young McMahan, Ellen Fishman, Jan Krzywicki, and Maurice Wright.

Shrish is also a skilled performer on double bass, with an interest in baroque and classical playing, as well as new music for double bass. Alongside double bass, Shrish plays viola da gamba and violone, both historical string instruments. For him, early music has the same novelty as new music, as both are played less often and do not necessarily conform to the styles of the standard repertoire. He also learned tabla, the North Indian hand drums, as a child, and still accompanies others from time to time. Read more about performance here!

Shrish has taught double bass privately and is currently the low strings teacher at Archbishop Ryan High School in Philadelphia, where he teaches cello, double bass, and electric bass lessons.

Shrish holds a B.A. in Political Science and Music from The College of New Jersey and a M.M. in Music Composition from Temple University.
